Uniform

Uniform Policy

Narrabeen North school community promotes the wearing of full school uniform by students at all times and is a reflection of the school values. It is expected that all students wear full school uniform each day and on all approved school outings. To prevent loss of items of clothing all uniforms should be labelled with your child's first initial and surname. There is a lost property area outside A Block (single dome) for any lost property.

To ensure protection from the sun, Narrabeen North Public School has a ‘No Hat, Play in the Shade' policy. This policy requires students to wear an approved school uniform hat when outdoors. Students without a uniform hat are required to remain in a supervised shaded area during outdoor activities. This policy is supported by the DoE and the NSW Cancer Council.

NEW NNPS Uniform FAQs

WHAT’S THE TIMELINE?

New Uniform Timeline

TRANSITION PERIOD

In line with Department of Education guidelines, there will be a long transition period of 2 and a bit years; from Term 4, 2025 - end of Term 4, 2027.

During this time, the new and legacy (existing) uniforms will be interspersed. This is to allow parents full use of legacy uniforms and maximise their existing cost outlay. As students outgrow or outwear the legacy uniform, they will be able to purchase a new uniform piece to replace it. Existing stock in our uniform shop will continue to be sold at reduced prices. No student will be penalised for

continuing to wear the legacy uniform during the transition period. The 2nd hand uniform shop will continue selling legacy items as well.

WHY IS THE UNIFORM CHANGING?

The school uniform has not changed in many, many years. The first school community survey (conducted Sep 2024) showed that there were many areas of the uniform that really needed to be updated or changed completely. The primary concerns raised included reducing the sheer quantity of items families are required to purchase; offering a more suitable warm option; improving the comfort of many of the items, phasing out the tunics and improving the durability and comfort of the polos.

There are more modern fabrics now available that will not only make the school community look better, but will be more comfortable for the students to wear. Looking around the playground, you can see many children wearing non-school uniform items (e.g. bike pants, leggings, tights under shorts) as some of the current options do not provide a suitable fit or comfort level. Timing wise, it makes sense to update the uniform now that the new build is done to move to a sharp, more practical uniform, designed to reflect the values and identity of our school community.

WHAT KIND OF COMMUNITY CONSULTATION WAS UNDERTAKEN?

●     3 community surveys were undertaken + 1 student & 1 teacher survey

●     7 ‘touch & try sessions with samples of fabrics for the community to see in real life and give feedback to the Uniform Sub Committee

●     Several P&C meetings with opportunities to provide feedback

Feedback received has been accepted and taken seriously. Repeated feedback has been presented to the Principal for his review, some comments and suggestions the Uniform Sub-Committee took onboard and influenced decisions made. Others we have responded to in the Survey Results documents presented at P&C meetings and then shared with the school community (via Week Ahead Bulletins).

HOW WERE THE NEW SUPPLIERS CHOSEN?

The Uniform Sub-Committee reached out to 3 x suppliers. - as well as exploring going direct to manufacturers and this was not a viable/available option to look into further.

They looked at the quality of their samples, fabric options, design options, minimum order quantities, ease of ordering and options regarding payment plans and of course, the price.

In narrowing down the suppliers for each product, where the quality was equal the cheaper supplier has been selected. The exception is the bamboo-infused sports polo as only one supplier offers this item. It’s a new fabric on the market, at a premium price, however there is no minimum order quantity and it received the majority vote during community consultation surveys.

WHAT ARE THE NEW FABRICS?

Everyday Polo - cotton back fabric (cotton inside, poly outer). The cotton inside gives soft comfort on the skin, whilst the polyester outer provides durability and stain resistance.

Sports Polo - bamboo infused poly, sublimated (printed). This is a new product to the market, is super soft and doesn’t feel like a typical poly sublimated shirt.

Shorts, Skorts - Made in 4-way microfibre stretch these items are flexible and durable. They are comfortable for kids and come with zippered pockets and adjustable waistbands.

Trackpants - Not fleece, these trackpants are also made of the same 4-way microfibre stretch allowing movement for kids to play in. Along with the soft inner layer it offers comfort and warmth.

HOW WAS THE PRICING DECIDED FOR THE NEW ITEMS?

The cost prices for the new items are more than the current items due to the current uniform fabric being extremely outdated and not commonly sold anymore. Moving to a more modern, breathable and preferred fabric is part of the process and this is reflected in the pricing - pricing between the suppliers were similar and where possible we have selected the cheaper supplier to reduce costs at every avenue.

Please keep in mind, NNPS current uniform prices have not increased in many, many years, even with the rising costs of materials and goods.

Below is a table that compares the uniform prices of our 3 neighbouring public schools, and their averages. You can see our new pricing is in line with other schools in our area.

UNIFORM PRICING AT OUR CLOSEST PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Everyday Polo Sports Polo Shorts Skorts Trackies
Neighbouring school 1 $33.00 $33.00 $38.00 $35.00 $40.00
Neighbouring school 2 $35.00 $35.00 $20.00 $26.00 $30.00
Neighbouring school 3 $32.00 $32.00 $25.00 $32.00 $31.00
AVERAGE $33.33 $33.33 $27.67 $31.00 $33.67

Some notes:

●     The new uniform costs for boys and girls are now the same.

●     By 2028, we would expect some uniforms to be making their way to 2nd hand markets (eg, personal hand-me-downs, Facebook Marketplace/Nth Narra Parents FB group, 2nd Hand Uniform Shop).

●     The school is open, supportive and is committed to assisting families who may need help with purchasing the new uniform (please contact the school for assistance)

WHAT IS THE P&C GOING TO DO WITH THE SURPLUS STOCK OF OLD UNIFORMS?

The P&C is doing it’s best to reduce waste of the old stock. We encourage the school community to continue purchasing legacy stock if sizes are still available to reduce the waste.

The Uniform Sub-Committee are exploring options to on-sell non-logo pieces to other schools with the same uniform. They are also exploring ways to repurpose items that are not able to be sold.

The P&C will also provide updates through the transition period on stock levels via the Week Ahead Bulletin to encourage families to purchase and use any remaining legacy stock.

Please get in touch if you have any ideas or solutions, or would like to be part of this task group by emailing nnpspandc.secretary@gmail.com

WHY ARE WE STICKING WITH GREEN, YELLOW AND BLACK?

These are the school colours and can not be changed at this time.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE PREVIOUS SURVEY RESULTS?

Each set of survey results were published in the 'Week Ahead' email and presented to the P&C at the meeting following each survey.

WHY ARE WE HAVING THE SHORTS, SKORTS, TRACKPANTS EMBROIDERED? WHY NOT KEEP THEM PLAIN?

The embroidered shorts, skorts and trackpants will give a sense of belonging and pride in the school uniform, reflecting the values and identity of our school community. The consistency will reduce the non-uniform variations giving a smart and inclusive look across the community, plus the yellow embroidery will tie in aesthetically with the polos.

ARE WE CHANGING THE HATS, SCHOOL BAGS, ETC?

The Uniform Sub-Committee will take a look at the other items once the uniform is agreed and implemented. Feedback was received during the consultation process on these items and they will also be reviewed in detail when possible.

I STILL HAVE A QUESTION THAT ISN’T ANSWERED
